The Korean War was fought in Korea by North and South Korea. China and the USSR both side with North Korea while the US sided with South Korea. On August 15, 1945 Korea split into North and South along the 38th parellel because the North favored communism and the South favored democracy. The war started on June 25, 1950 and ended on July 27, 1953. On August 15, 1948 the US military government turns over power to the Republic of South Korea. On June 28, 1950 US bombers attack troops in Han River area but The North Korean Army captured Seoul. President Truman ordered ground troops into Korea and he ordered his Air Force to bomb North Korea on June 30, 1950. The US had a heavy loss on June 22, 1950 at the end of the battle for Taejon. On August 13, 1950 the first UN counterattack failed. The Chinese Communist troops crossed the Talu River into Korea on October 14, 1950. General Douglas MacAthur's final "Home by Christmas" begans on November 24, 1950. Seoul got captured by the Chinese on January 5, 1951. On March 18, 1951 the UN retake Seoul. MacArthur was dischraged from command and General Matthew Ridgway was given command on April 11, 1951. On September 23, 1951 the UN forces take Heartbreak Ridge after a 18 day battle. The North Korean and Chinese leaders agree to exchange POW's on March 28, 1953. Full peace talk continues on April 18, 1953. On June 18, 1953 South Korea release 27000 North Korean POW's. Fire is finally seized on July 27, 1953. 12 hours later the war is over but not before 54000 Americans were either dead or wounded.
